Eating Disorders and Studying

The thoughts of those who suffer from an eating disorder are constantly revolving around eating. Those affected have a warped self-image, and they try to compensate for this through their eating behaviour. Though their thoughts are constantly on this subject, eating is torture: consuming food is associated with negative feelings and gets out of control.  In the long term, physical and psychological illnesses develop.

If you are unsure whether you have an eating disorder, the questions below may help:

  • Are you always scared of putting on weight or eating too much, so that you are constantly on the look-out even for very small changes in your weight?
  • Have you already tried many diets and/or do you use laxatives or diuretics to lose weight?
  • Do you feel that you are in vicious circle of dieting and being starving?
  • Do you have a tendency to compensate for negative feelings, failures or disappointments by "comfort eating", or do you find eating to be basically repugnant?
  • Does eating make you suffer from guilt feelings and crises of conscience?
  • Do you hide your eating behaviour from other people?
  • Do you deliberately vomit after you have eaten, and/or is your generally normal eating behaviour accompanied by occasional bouts of being starving, so that you completely lose control?
