The highlight of the 2024 financial year was the opening of the Domshof canteen with over 280 seats in the Domshof Forum at the University of Bremen. Studierendenwerk Bremen invested 370,000 euros in the new location in the heart of the city. Furthermore, ambitious sustainability projects were successfully implemented in two residential complexes.
"The Domshof canteen is the new social hub of the Forum am Domshof. We are providing affordable, high-quality catering for students at this great location. With a coffee bar in the entrance foyer of the Forum am Domshof, the Studierendenwerk Bremen will further contribute to the attractiveness and quality of stay of the location in the winter semester 2025/26," says Hauke Kieschnick, Managing Director of the Studierendenwerk Bremen.
The Domshof canteen serves around 1,500 students and 160 employees of the Faculty of Law and other university facilities at the Domshof site.
"Climate protection was also a focus of our activities in 2024. I am delighted that we can report on two major and successfully completed sustainability projects in this annual report. The commissioning of the photovoltaic system on the roof of the Emmy residential complex, which was financed from our own funds, means that environmentally friendly electricity is now being used there. In addition, the Vorstrasse residential complex was connected to the district heating network. With a predicted reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of around 100 tons, annual emissions there are likely to be halved. As a result of this measure, all 1,194 of the 2,245 Studierendenwerk Bremen residences in the city of Bremen that can currently be connected to the district heating network will now be supplied with district heating."
"We are concerned about the development of students' mental health. This is illustrated by the growing number of students who turn to our psychological counseling center with severe psychological crises. The increasing referral rate to established psychological counseling also highlights the need for support," continued Kieschnick.
