Here are some of our climate protection and sustainability projects.
Since June 2025, we have been labeling particularly climate-friendly dishes in our canteens with the KlimaTeller logo. In this way, we are creating more transparency and enabling conscious decisions for climate-friendly nutrition.
In the Unimensa and the Mensa am Neustadtswall, we offer the Zero Waste Plate. Shortly after regular closing time, leftover food and components are offered at reduced prices.
In our cafeterias, unsold baked goods and snacks can be saved shortly after closing time with the help of the"too good to go" app. In addition to these consumption-based offers, we also rely on demand-oriented production and processing to avoid food waste. We use state-of-the-art appliances that save up to 40% energy compared to conventional appliances.
In 2024, the heat supply for the Vorstrasse residential complex was switched from natural gas to district heating. This change in energy source is expected to save us around 100 tons of CO₂e per year in future and we have connected all residential complexes that can currently be supplied with district heating to district heating networks.
Our new PV system on the roof of the Emmy residential complex was also put into operation in 2024. The system has an output of 29 kWp and the electricity generated (expected to be around 26 MWh/a) will be used entirely in the residential complex.
Our canteens are BIO-certified [DE-ÖKO-039] and use:
We are gradually switching to LED lighting in our residential complexes . A resource-saving combined heat and power plant is in use in the Neustadt residential complex. The Studierendenwerk also uses 100% low-emission green electricity.
In our administration , externally ordered print products are produced on recycled paper and with CO₂ offsetting wherever possible. Our IT department is increasingly using used/refurbished hardware in all departments and areas of the Studierendenwerk.
We offset the greenhouse gas emissions caused by our business trips in cooperation with the Climate Fund and KlimaInvest Green Concepts GmbH, whose project portfolio is certified by the independent and non-profit Verified Carbon Standard Association (VCS).
Since May 2023, Studierendenwerk Bremen has had a climate protection manager funded by the National Climate Protection Initiative.
National Climate Protection Initiative
With the National Climate Protection Initiative, the Federal Ministry for the Environment has been initiating and funding numerous projects that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions since 2008. Its programs and projects cover a broad spectrum of climate protection activities: from the development of long-term strategies to concrete assistance and investment support measures. This diversity is a guarantee for good ideas. The National Climate Initiative helps to anchor climate protection on the ground. It benefits consumers as well as companies, local authorities and educational institutions.
The creation of this page is funded as part of the project KSI Klimaschutzmanagement - Erstellung eines Integrierten Klimaschutzkonzeptes für das Studierendenwerk Bremen (Erstvorhaben befristet bis 28.02.2025). Funding reference: 67K22739 (funding recipient: Studierendenwerk Bremen) The aim of the project is to create an integrated climate protection concept for the Studierendenwerk Bremen.
